When you are a business owner there are so many hats you need to wear. It is common to get overwhelmed by the number of tasks that need to be done and it’s no surprise when your business ends up stalling. So what should you focus on?
Are your Clients Running Your Business?
The customer you are working with isn’t always the right type of customer for you! Let’s be honest, no one wants to have to tell a client that things aren’t working out, and a lot of times if you’re working with people who aren’t the right clients for you, that happens. There are a lot of reasons why a business relationship might not work out, and you only have so much time you don’t want to spend it on relationships that aren’t great when there are people out there who would be a great fit for you! Choosing the right clients, the ones you and your business are really designed for is a huge step towards making your company thrive.
What type of customer are you attracting? Are you reaching the people who have the problems you solve, the kinds of problems that once solved will make huge changes in your customers’ lives? Too many times I see businesses taking on clients that are good enough, rather than perfect. If those are the types of clients you are getting, and you are trying to fit them into your business any way you won’t have time for the clients you can make the most impact with..
Have you taken the concept of “Client-Centric” too far? When you own a business your goal is to provide a service or a product, and for that, you need people interested in buying it. So, of course, your business needs to fit your client’s needs. However, you need to think about the type of people your business was meant to serve. Who are your ideal clients? If you’re changing your business in the hopes that you can make it fit people who aren’t good clients for you then you are hurting your business. If you know there are people out there who need the service you want to provide, and that you are a good fit for, you should focus on reaching those people rather than changing yourself to provide something else for clients that aren’t a good fit.
Do Your Business Needs Always Come Last?
When you put your client’s needs first before looking after your business, because you have to work harder than necessary to prove to them that they made the right choice by hiring you, that is how your business will fail to thrive. As your work piles up you never seem to find time to work on your own business Your business will end up costing you more than just money.
The #1 cause of inconsistent income in your business happens when you are solely serving clients that take up all of your time and you are dependent on them because you haven’t diversified your income. Creating a consistent sustainable business requires diversification. When all of your income is coming from one or two clients if anything happens to them or their business then out of nowhere your only source of income is gone. For your business to grow and thrive it needs an investment of your time and dedication to create a steady and growing income that isn’t dependent on one big thing alone.
Your inconsistency will make it harder to become known for what you do. Reaching out and catching people’s attention takes time and repetition. Let’s say you have a blog and someone finds it and really likes you at first, so they start following your content, but then next week when they come back there’s nothing new, and then again the next week. Then you send out this great newsletter but then you stop creating content for another three weeks. People will lose interest and forget about your business.
On the other hand, if they are constantly reminded of the work you do and the amazing results that you get for your clients, they are much more likely to see your value and be interested in bringing this value to their lives.
What is the Difference Between Overgiving and Over Delivering?
What is the difference between over-delivering and overgiving? Giving feels great, we love the appreciation we get from clients when we deliver a little extra here and there. But delivering a little bit isn’t the same as overgiving. When you over give you demote yourself. You over give because you feel like you aren’t valuable enough, that you have to do more and more so that people will like you. You don’t believe your clients would pay you more for the service you are providing and the extra time you are investing.
Too much time spent on “Pick your brain sessions” is hurting your bottom line! When a client or a prospect wants to talk and hear your opinions once in a while, that’s not a problem. It is part of your business and helps to build a great relationship. The problem comes when someone wants you to tell them your best ideas and become an unpaid coach or mentor so they can get the information they need from you without ever hiring or paying you fairly for your knowledge and time.
Your time is valuable! If you have a hard time saying “no”, you can create some free products to direct people to so that you can collect their information and get them in your sales funnel! Share some of your knowledge but never enough that it will impact your business and your own sense of value.
How Can You Be Client-Centric and Get Shit Done?
Set time aside for your business as well as your clients. I can’t stress enough how important planning is. Your business needs your attention and if you don’t schedule it in and have it be part of your priorities you won’t get to it. Assign how much time you are spending on clients and how much you are spending on your business, break it all down in small tasks, and stick with it!
Keep organized so that the time you have for your business is productive. The time you spent looking for files, documents, or trying to figure out where you stopped last time might seem small, but if you add it all up, that is hours of work that you could be doing something else with. Not to mention the stress it puts on you. When you are organized, work flows easily and smoothly, things get done faster, and you don’t feel overwhelmed.
Leverage your time by hiring a VA or other team members so that you can all be working on different things and getting more done in less time. Your time is valuable. If you don’t have free time you can’t recharge and you will burn out. Without taking time for yourself, you can’t continue to add value to your business and your clients.
What Should I Focus On?
Ask yourself “Can someone else do this?”. There are some things that only you can do, and many more that ANYONE can do. Focus as much of your time as possible on the things that only you can do. If you charge $30 for one hour of your time doing things only you can do and you can pay someone else $10 to free up that time by doing other tasks, then you are using your income wisely to create more income.
3 words… Income Generating Tasks! Those are the ones that need to be prioritized. Limit the time you spend giving free help or doing tasks that won’t effectively bring income.
Learning (courses, podcasts, books, etc). Knowledge is power. Any successful business owner will tell you how much trial and error goes into building a successful business. You will have to go through that process and learn new things that are specific to your business. There are many common mistakes across businesses and you don’t have to learn those the hard way. You can learn from other’s experiences, save time, have less stress, and grow faster.
What you focus on grows!
This goes for things you want and things you don’t. 🤯
I have worked with many entrepreneurs who want to provide amazing results for their clients, and all too often they are focusing too much on what they need to do to please their clients, that they forget that they also need to focus on what they need to succeed.
