Chaotic Discipline: A Neurodivergent Guide to Working With Your Energy, Not Against It

Chaotic Discipline: A Neurodivergent Guide to Working With Your Energy, Not Against It

Let’s be honest: most of us have spent years trying to force ourselves into neat little productivity boxes that just don’t fit. You know the ones—color-coded calendars, rigid schedules, and the smug promise that “if you just stick to the routine, success will follow.” Well, if that worked for you, fantastic. But if you’ve ever found yourself half-asleep in front of your laptop, doom-scrolling with a stale cup of coffee in hand, let’s talk about something better: chaotic discipline.

This is for the brilliant minds who sprint through ideas like caffeinated squirrels and then crash into recovery mode. If you’ve ever wondered why your productivity rhythm seems allergic to consistency, buckle up. You’re not broken—you’re just wired for a different kind of magic.

The Myth of Steady Discipline (And Why It Makes You Itchy)

Most of us were taught that discipline looks like showing up every day, at the same time, with the same energy, doing the same things. It’s the classic “slow and steady wins the race” mantra, which is adorable…for tortoises. But if you’re more of a rocket-fueled jackrabbit, this approach can feel like trying to wear someone else’s shoes—two sizes too small and hideously beige.

When you try to force yourself into that mold, you end up anxious, burnt out, or convinced you’re failing. The truth? That gold standard of consistency just doesn’t account for the way some brains work. Neurodivergent brains, in particular, thrive on sprints, bursts, and occasional total shutdowns. This isn’t a design flaw—it’s your natural rhythm.

Once you understand that, you can stop blaming yourself for not feeling like a productivity robot. The goal isn’t to become someone else. The goal is to figure out how you work best—and honor that, even if it looks a little chaotic from the outside.

The Magic of High-Energy Days

You know the days I’m talking about. The days when you’re unstoppable, caffeinated or not, and your brain feels like it’s lighting up the night sky. You build systems, fix automations, write content, plan launches, and do everything short of achieving world peace by lunchtime.

These moments are your creative apex—when your mind and body are (almost) in sync, and you can practically taste the dopamine. If it were possible to bottle this energy, you’d make billions. But here’s the kicker: you don’t get these days by force. They arrive when you’re rested and inspired.

Trying to manufacture them on demand is like yelling at a cat to come here—sure, maybe you’ll get lucky once, but mostly you’ll just look unhinged. So appreciate these days for what they are: rare and glorious bursts of productivity. Enjoy the ride.

Planning for Low-Energy Days Without the Guilt

If you have high-energy days, you also have their ugly cousins: low-energy, fog-brain, can’t-even-summon-the-will-to-put-on-pants days. These are the days when your brain is still buzzing with ideas, but your body has packed up and left a “gone fishing” sign on the door.

Instead of declaring yourself a failure, plan for it. Seriously. Build brain-dead tasks into your schedule—things you can do even when you feel like a potato. Click, sort, review, research—whatever doesn’t demand your creative brilliance.

Recognizing you’re in a slump early saves you from wasting hours trying to brute-force your way through it. If you catch it at 10 a.m., you can pivot to something manageable. If you don’t notice until 3 p.m., you’ll have spent your entire day fighting an uphill battle. Spoiler alert: that battle is never worth it.

The Art of Being Present (Even When Guilt is Loud)

Let’s talk about guilt—especially the flavor that shows up when you’re trying to juggle everything at once. Maybe you’re working while thinking about your kids, or spending time with your kids while thinking about work. You’re everywhere except here, and it’s exhausting.

Learning to be present doesn’t sound revolutionary, but it is. Choosing to be exactly where you are—without the mental ping-pong match—can change everything. Your work gets better. Your relationships feel richer. And that constant guilt monster finally goes quiet (or at least takes a nap).

You don’t have to split yourself in half to be a good parent, partner, or business owner. You just have to decide that when you’re working, you’re working, and when you’re resting, you’re resting. Simple? Sure. Easy? Not so much. Worth it? Absolutely.

Ask What You Want—Not What You’ll Tolerate

Most of us are experts at settling. We tolerate bad systems, chaotic schedules, and impossible expectations because that’s what we think we deserve. Here’s a revolutionary idea: ask yourself what you actually want.

Not what you’ll tolerate. Not what you think you should want. What you truly desire. Maybe you want more space to rest. Maybe you crave days full of focus, or long stretches to build something new. Maybe you want to work in your pajamas until further notice.

Whatever it is, your preferences matter. Your rhythm matters. When you honor them, you stop surviving and start thriving. You’ll still have off days (welcome to being human), but you’ll also have more clarity, more energy, and more genuine joy in your work.

Here’s the truth: you don’t need anyone’s permission to rest, to recharge, or to do things your own way. Your rhythm isn’t a liability—it’s your superpower. Your rest is productive. Your bursts of brilliance are real. And no, you’re not failing because you’re not “firing on all cylinders” today. You’re simply refueling for tomorrow.

So go ahead—ditch the beige productivity costume and embrace your chaotic discipline. It’s messy, it’s imperfect, and it’s absolutely magnificent.
