In this episode of the Overgivers Anonymous Podcast, we have Megan Hamilton as our guest! We’re gonna be talking about learning how to speak will help us all become more assertive and make setting boundaries easier.
Highlights:
- Even in theatre school my friends and I would say, “Man, this is really important. Like everybody should know how to do this”. Just simple things like a physical presence, or how to carry your body effectively, how to speak well, how to warm up your face so that you can speak with enunciation. All of these suggestions are really helpful when we want to get up in front of people and speak.
- The big thing you need to know about boundaries is that you can set them (and that’s scary) and people are gonna try to break them. You have to keep setting them.
- You can say the exact same thing in the exact same words in two different ways and one way is going to be a heck of a lot more effective than the other.
- You must be solid in your belief systems and know what your boundaries are and stand up for your boundaries. It’s not “the easier it gets scenario” the more often you do it, but you will see the value in it.
- Yes, I think it becomes easier when we do the things that we get comfortable doing, but there’s always a new “uncomfortable”. It is all about getting comfortable with being uncomfortable.
- If you’re going to give a speech to 20,000 people in a stadium, or if you’re going to present your quarterly numbers at the work meeting, the fear you feel is the same. In both situations, you have the same physical manifestations. You’ve got the sweaty palms, you’ve got the blushing, you’ve got the shaking legs, you’ve got the shaking hands, you’ve got the sweating, you’ve got the heart palpitations, the pounding in your chest, all of this stuff is the same.
- The more women that can learn to be empowered by standing up to take control of their own boundaries and to be comfortable in being able to speak their truth…I think that would be fantastic for our world as a whole.
